During the midst of the Great Depression and World War II, she played a pivotal role in keeping the family owned Horste Meat Market operating for the citizens of Grayville, Illinois. She also operated a grocery store while living with her family in Evansville, Indiana. In the mid 1950's, her career path changed, working as a supervisor with Johnnie Manufacturing in Albion, Illinois, retiring in 1975.
After retirement, she took an active role in doing the things she loved the most - cooking her famous soup, gardening, shopping, painting, crocheting, vacationing, attending class reunions, watching basketball (University of Kentucky, NCAA & NBA), going to church each Sunday and taking a major interest in her two grandchildren, Kathleen and Patrick Robinson - just to name a few. Bea was also known as someone by her friends who always dressed impeccably. On September 19, 2003, after fighting various health ailments, she departed from this world in Mt. Carmel, Illinois at Wabash General Hospital at the age of 85.

Survivors at the time included her daughter, Sharon Kay Horste Robinson (Joe), of Morganfield, Kentucky; one brother, L.D. Aulvin of Albion, Illinois (Thelma Ruth); and two grandchildren, N. Kathleen and Patrick J. Robinson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Derral Horste on April 8, 1986; son Lewis Albert Horste, on October 28, 1939 and a stepson Dean Horste On January 2, 1977; parents, Lewis Grant Aulvin and Mamie Bond Aulvin, four sisters Lelah Aulvin Ostendorf, Fonderine "Fonnie" Aulvin Gill, Audrey Aulvin Bomze, and Virdia Lee Aulvin, and two brothers, George Huber Aulvin and Harland A. Aulvin.

Ingram Funeral Home handled the arrangements with cremation being chosen by Mrs. Horste. Memorial Services were held on October 3, 2003 at 1:00p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Grayville, Illinois with the Reverend William "Bill" Minor officiating.
