Obituary of Mrs. Bakalyar
Anna Katus was born at Kukova, Saris county, Slovakia, April 7, 1849. She was married to John Bakalyar, of Giraltovce, Saris county, Slovakia, in 1870. In the fall of 1879 she, with her four children came to America to join her husband who had gone there the year before and prepared a home at Streator, Illinois. In the spring of 1893 they came to Minnesota and settled in Jackson county on the northeast quarter of section twenty-seven, Hunter township, where they lived until 1900, when they moved to Lakefield, leaving one of the sons on the farm. In May 1916 her husband died and she lived alone until three years ago when she made her home with her children. She died Sunday evening, November 26th, at the home of her son Michael, in South Lakefield, seven of her children being present when the end came. She leaves ten children, namely: John in Hunter township; Mrs. Anna Matyas, Lakefield; Mrs. Mary Matasovsky, Minneota; Andrew in Hunter township; Michael, Lakefield; George, Duluth, Minn.; Mrs. Susan Schmirch, St. Louis, Mo.; Thomas, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Stephen, Des Moines, Iowa; and Ellen, Brookston, Minn. All were present at the funeral except George who was unable to come. She leaves two brothers and a sister, namely John Katus, Ewington township; M.L.Katus, Wtauga, South Dakota; and Mary Katus, Chicago, Ill. Andy Bakalyar, of Streator, Ill., father of Mrs. Mike Bakalyar was also present. The funeral services were held November 30 at the Slovak Lutheran church in Hunter township, Rev. Bomba officiating assisted by Rev. Paul who preached the English sermon. She was laid to rest in the Slovak Lutheran cemetery.
