"BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY:
"ANDREW BAKALYAR was a well-known Hunter township farmer. Born January 10, 1878, in Czechoslovakia, he was a son of John and Anna (Katus) Bakalyar, immigrating to America with his mother, brother and sisters, and his grandmother, Ellen Bakalyar, in 1879. They lived a short time in Streator, Illinois, before coming to Minnesota in 1893, settling in section 27, Hunter township, where he later married and raised his own family.
"While in Streator, he attended night school while working in the coal mines. After they settled in Hunter township, he worked for neighbors, using oxen and horses, besides helping his father break sod and farming. Doing much by hand, they worked through many hardships and financial problems.
"At the Slovak Lutheran church in Hunter township, Andrew married Susan Matasovsky on November 18, 1902. Born on July 8, 1884, in Czechslovakia, she came to hunter township with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Matasovsky, in 1898.
"Andrew and Susan were the parents of twelve children: Susan (Mrs. A.L. Masovsky), born in 1905, lives in Lakefield; Thoma, born in 1906, lives in Winter Haven, Florida; Andrew, born in 1908, lives in rural Jackson; Margaret (Mrs. Thoas Wiezorek), born in 1910, deceased; Theodore, born in 1912, lives in rural Jackson; Lawrence, born in 1914, lives in Jackson; Ethel (Mrs. William Scholten) born in 1915, lives in Worthington; Lillian, born in 1917, lives in rural Jackson; Arthur, born in 1919, lives in Lakefield; George, born in 1921, lives in Windom; Joseph, born in 1923, lives in Cherokeee, Iowa; and Carl, born in 1925, lives in Preston, Minnesota. All their children were born in Hunter township.
"Andrew served on the school, church and township boards, holding various positions. He was also district manager of the Red Cross. He belonged to the Lakefield Commercial Club, Farmers Union, and insurance lodges.
"He enjoyed music, baseball, and horseshoes.
"Seven of his sons seved in the miltary service. One served in the Minnesota State Guard during World War II, two served in the European Theater and two served in the South Pacific Theater. All returned home safely."
