"REV. BAKALAR IS DEAD AT 82
"The Rev. Thomas Bakalar, 82, of 1226 Nuttman Ave., died at 6:05 p.m. yesterday in St. Joseph's Hospital where he had been a patient 16 days.
"Born in Streator, Ill., he had lived here 47 years and was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church. Retired from the ministry, he served pastorates in Chicago and Cudahy, Wis., and was a professor at Concordia College until he retired because of ill health. Later he was self-employed as a tailor.
"Survivors include his wife, Margaret; three sons, Nestor, Birmingham, Ala., Gerald and Theodore, both of Fort Wayne; five daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Andrews, Mrs. Marion Wagner, Mrs. Ruth Lynch and Mrs. Norma Custard, all of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Ann Mell, Battle Creek, Mich., three brothers, George and Steve, both in California, and Andrew, Jackson, Mich. (MN); three sisters, Mrs. Anna Mattias, Jackson, Minn., Mrs. Susan Schnerch, St. Louis, and Miss Ellen Bakalar, Jackson, Mich (MN); 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
"Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Emmaus Church with the Rev. Carl B. Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens. Preferred memorial are gifts to Emmaus Lutheran School. Friends may call at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today."
