Philip was born in Monongalia County, Virginia but this website does not recognize that location as that county is now in West Virginia, which didn't even exist at the time Philip was born. It's too bad the website can't be programmed for these kinds of geographical name changes.

Philip was the son of James Jasper and Mary (Gordon) Austin. He used many nicknames, including P.G., Gordon and Gordy. There are several records with his age or birth information, but none of them are consistent. Birth ranges from Oct 1833 to Aug 1838. It is impossible to know which of his many records may be the correct one. His death record says he was age 77 yrs, 10 months and 2 days, but there is no way to determine the accuracy of this.

Philip lived in Taylor County, West Virginia most of his life. He was a farmer for a time. He married Elisabeth Catherine Rogers 5 March 1863 in Taylor County, Virginia (later West Virginia). They had thirteen children. Philip and his wife separated sometime before 1889. Both Philip, Catherine and many of the children spent time in the Taylor County poor house. Philip spent most of the last fifteen years of his life living there.
