Mary M. Highfill, 91, of Atchison, Kansas, dies Thursday, October 7, 1999, at Cray Senior Manor in Atchison.

Funeral services will be hold Monday, October 11, 1999, at 10:00 AM at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, also in Atchison. Visitation will be hold Sunday from 7-8:30 PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mary Highfill was born on November 16, 1907, on the family farm north of Lancaster, Kansas. She was the daughter of John C and Mary Elizabeth Haney Ipe. She attended Bell Grade School north of Lancaster and graduated from Atchison High School. Mrs. Highfill was formerly employed as a dental assistant and later worked for the Ruhlman Grocery Store. She then worked as a bookkeeper for the Atchison Hospital, retiring after 17 1/2 years. All of her employment was in Atchison. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Atchison.

She and Vernon T. Highfill were married on October 8, 1927 in Atchison, where they lived throughout their lives except for a short period of time when they lived in Horton, Kansas. Mr. Highfill preceded her in death on January 28, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her son, Norman Highfill, on August 5, 1999; two brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Highfill is survived by three daughters; Sarah (Robert) Rains of Atchison; Evelyn (Lafe) Williams of San Antonio, Texas; and Dorothy Ply of Guttenberg, Iowa. All of her daughters were registered nurses, a fact that she was very proud of. One daughter-in-law, Tokiko Highfill of Pensacola, Florida; one brother-in-law, Eugene Highfill of Lebanon, Oregan; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren also survive.
