Evelyn Louise Highfill Williams passed away peacefully on April 11, 2021 at the age of 90 in San Antonio, Texas. Evelyn was the second daughter of Vernon Thomas Highfill and Mary Margert Ipe. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Norman, her sister Dorothy, and her husband of 66 years, Lafe. She is survived by her sister Sarah Rains (Bob) of Atchison. Evelyn is also survived by her two children, Kim Williams of Widby Island, Washington and of San Antonio; and Lisa Talcott and her husband, Wayne, of San Antonio. Evelyn had four grown grandchildren, Kimmie Williams and Eric Williams, and Matt Talcott (wife Marcella) and Jon Talcott (wife Bonghwa). Greatgrandchildren include Lafe, Maxine, and Theo Talcott. Evelyn had many nieces and nephews scattered across the US. Evelyn was a native of Kansas and Missouri. She grew up in Atchison, Kansas, and lived most of her adult life in Kansas City, Missouri. Shortly after she and Lafe retired, they moved to San Antonio to support and be near family, and they remained in San Antonio the rest of their lives. Evelyn received her RN diploma from University of Kansas. Over her nursing career, she worked in many positions including hospital settings, as a school nurse, and as a private duty surgical scrub nurse for a team of OB-GYN doctors. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church, attending Gladstone, Claycomo, and Highlands congregations in suburban Kansas City, and the Shenandoah congregation in San Antonio. Family was the most important thing to Evelyn. She organized her life and work around her husband,
then her children, and then grandchildren. One of her first airplane trips was to Okinawa, Japan to see her grandchildren when her daughter and son-in-law were stationed there. She made that long trip every year to see her grandchildren while the family lived overseas. Evelyn was an avid crafter—she always watched television with a project on her lap. She sewed, quilted, crocheted, did beadwork, made jewelry, and was excited about rubber stamps and making cards. She enjoyed sharing those crafts with others, teaching neighborhood children and joining crafting groups. She made many scrapbooks of cut-out pictures from magazines for babies—she loved sitting on the floor and playing with kids of all ages. Evelyn loved beautiful pictures, which she collected on her computer—"to use in a card later." She was a collector of little things that were "neat," and she accumulated an impressive variety. She always decorated for holidays: she had centerpieces for all seasons of the year. She had a habit of reading the paper daily and for many years, she and Lafe completed the crossword puzzle with breakfast. No services will be held in San Antonio, but instead there will be a graveside service and gathering in Atchison, Kansas, closer to where most of her family resides. Evelyn will be buried in Jordan Creek Cemetery, Bendena, Kansas, next to her husband Lafe.
