Marie Williams Whisonant, 96, of Elkton, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at the home of Violet Conley near Elkton.
Mrs. Whisonant was born June 20, 1911, in Elkton, and was a daughter of the late Everette and Della Bryant Williams.
She was a press operator for the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., before retiring after 40 years of employment. She lived in Washington, D.C., most of her life and returned to Rockingham County seven years ago.
In 1949, she attended and was active in the Tenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., for 51 years. She was the first person to be baptized at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in the Bryant Hollow area of Elkton and was its oldest living member.
She is survived by three brothers, Hoover Williams and Harold Williams, both of Elkton and Eddie Williams of Lanham, Md., and a number of nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Francis Belle conducted the funeral Saturday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, where the family received friends. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery near Elkton.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Sinai Baptist Church, 5197 Bryant Hollow Road, Elkton, VA 22827 for a memorial plaque to be placed in the church in her memory.
