TISKILWA — Vernon "Jake" H. Chamberlain, 84, of Tiskilwa died at 1:32 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at St. Margaret's Hospital in Spring Valley.
Born April 8, 1923, in Peoria to Harry and Gertrude (Junker) Chamberlain, he married Laura Catherine Miller Aug. 19, 1946, in St. Joseph Church in Henry. She died Sept. 30, 2006.
He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy as a Gunners Mate, First Class, from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Holton DD703. This ship escorted President Eisenhower during the signing of the peace treaty. He worked as a road commissioner in the Varna area and later at Caterpillar Tractor Co., Mossville plant, retiring after 20 years with the company.
He was a lifetime member of both Henry American Legion Post 323 and Henry VFW Post 555, the Princeton Moose Lodge and Local 974 in Peoria.
Surviving are two sons, Dennis (Kathy) Chamberlain of Henry and James (Carolyn) Chamberlain of East Peoria; two daughters, Bethany Kebl of Manitowish Waters, Wis., and Sally (Mike) Arnett of Princeton; two brothers, Warren Chamberlain of Varna and Norman Chamberlain of Metamora; four sisters, Pat Rudd of Alaska, Jo Ann Chrissman of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Mary Lou Jeffries and Beverly Williams, both of Kenansville, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Brent Livek, Amy Murray, Lisa, Jeremy and Brian Chamberlain, April and Kyle Arnett, and Art Chase; and one great-grandchild, Jacob Chase.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Jeffrey and Jerry Chamberlain; and three brothers, Wayne, Frank and Randall Chamberlain.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Calvert-Johnson & McKitrick Memorial Home, Henry, with the Rev. Eldon Cook officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Henry, with full military rites conducted by the Henry American Legion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the services Monday in the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to St. Margaret's Hospice or the Tiskilwa Ambulance Service.
