Samuel Campbell was born near Shelocta in Indiana County, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1859. (His cemetery headstone and obituary state that he was born in 1854, but census records consistently show that his date of birth was 1859). He was the son of Alexander and Sarah Ramsey Campbell. In 1866 he moved to Alamakee County, Iowa with his parents Alexander and Sarah Campbell, his brothers Alexander Johnston, Hugh Calvin and William and sister Sarah. His father had moved to Iowa in order to purchase farm land for each of his sons. At the age of 26, Samuel married Mary Leas on December 22, 1885. Mary's father, Jeremiah Leas, owned a large farm near Samuel's farm. Samuel and Mary had three children: Melvin Finley (born 1886), Alexander (born 1890) and Mary Pearl(born 1892). Samuel's wife, Mary, died on March 23, 1893 and their infant daughter, Mary Pearl, died one week later. Samuel's mother, Sarah, helped his raise his two sons until she had an accident in 1898 that left her an invalid.

Samuel married a nearby neighbor, Alice Kelly on September 15, 1895 and in 1902 Samuel and Alice Campbell, their sons Melvin and Alexander and Samuel's mother Sarah Ramsey Campbell moved to Hamilton County, Nebraska. They made the trip by train. The family first lived west of Giltner, then later purchased 240 acres of land 3 miles south of Giltner. Samuel's health failed him and he spent the last years of his life in the hospital at Hastings, Nebraska. His sons, Melvin and Alex, took over the farm land for him. Samuel died July 8, 1932 and is buried beside his mother in Greenwood cemetery
