Alexander Campbell was the son of Alexander and Margaret (Johnston) of Antrim County Ireland. Records show they had four sons: James, born in 1794, Samuel, Alexander, born in 1806, and Andrew, born in 1810. All four sons emigrated to the United States, locating in Indiana County Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Henderson who was born February 25, 1808 and died November 16, 1843 or 1847 in Pennsylvania. Their children were Alexander Johnston (1834), Letitia (1835), Margaret (1837), Mary Jane (1839), John H. (1840), and Elizabeth (1842). After Elizabeth's death Alexander married Sarah Ramsey in 1855. Sarah's obituary states the date as February 14, 1855, but a copy of the marriage certificate in her Bible shows the date of marriage as May 20, 1855. Their children were Hugh Calvin (1856), Sarah (1857), James (1858). Samuel (1859), and William (1862). James died as a child. In 1866, Alexander and Sarah left Indiana County, Pennsylvania because they felt their 135 acre farm was not large enough to divide between their children. Alexander chose to settle near Rossville, Iowa because there were springs on each of the farms he had chosen for his sons so they would have a water supply just as they had in Pennsylvania. The area was hilly and wooded, reminiscent of Pennsylvania. Alexander Campbell died February 8, 1886
