Thomas Kessel, 80, a resident of Hancock county most of his life died Friday at 3 p.m. at his home on route 2 near Pughtown following a long illness.
He was a member of the Pughtown Presbyterian church.
Mr. Kessel is survived by four sons, Edward [sic: Edgar] Kessel of Cleveland, D. W. Kessel of Hollidays Cove, B. M. Kessel of Detroit, and K. K. Kessel of Weirton; three daughters, Mrs. Alice Allison of Chester, Mrs. Helen Pugh at home, and Mrs. A. S.[Lois] Bischoff of Milton, W. Va; two brothers, P. W. Kessel of Alliance and H. M. Kessel of Salem, 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the home Monday at 2 p.m. by Rev. Calvin T. Weimer, pastor of the Chester Presbyterian church. Burial will be in the Pughtown Union cemetery.
Friends may call at the home.

Name: He was born Pleasant Upton Kessel, but when he left Jackson County, WV, to come to Hancock County, someone said, "You look more like a Tom." Everyone called him Tom after that, and he signed his documents, including his will, as Thomas Kessel.
