Rev. C. M. Butler, pastor of Holy Church of God, dies at 77
-
The Rev. Corbin Marion Butler, 77, founder and pastor of Savannah's Holy Church of God, died Sunday at home.
-
Butler started the church 53 years ago and served as its pastor for the rest of his life. Last November, he saw the church move to a new sanctuary on Little Neck Road after its previous sanctuary on West 49th Street was lost in a January fire.
-
Butler was born in Bryan County and lived in Savannah many years. He attended the old Pembroke School.
-
According to his family, he dedicated his life to Christian service after hemorrhaging almost to death while a patient in a sanitarium. That came, they said, after he was stricken at age four with tuberculosis of the bone.
-
He was a radio minister and traveled from the East Coast to the West Coast to speak. His daily routine included making radio broadcasts and numerous hospital and private home visits. He conducted well over 2,000 funerals in Florida, Kansas, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.
