George was a 1931 graduate of the Ulster High School. During the depression George worked as a herdsman on farms in Montgomery County and Southern New Jersey. On Sept. 12, 1939 he married the former Elizabeth S. Krieder in Middletown, Pa. After WW II George entered into dairy farming in Sheshequin. He later raised Herefords on his own farm for many years and served as a custodian at the Ulster Elementary School for many years. Mr. Keir was a member of the Ulster United Methodist Church. He was active in the Boy Scouts, Troup 43 and in 4-H. He was a member of G.L.F. and a committeeman for Agway for many years. George was a delegate of N.E.B.A. for many years, a member of Bradford County Soil Conservation, member and past president of the Ulster-Sheshequin Fire Company, and honorary member and past Grand Master of the I.O.O.F. Sheshequin Lodge. He was a trustee and past president of the Sheshequin Cemetery Association.
Surviving are: his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Keir at home; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Nancy Keir of Bradenville, Pa., Nile and Helen Keir of Sheshequin; a daughter, Lois K. Stewart of Wichita, Kansas. Six grandchildren, Douglas, Nanette, Rebecca and Kathryn Keir, Carlyle and Aaron Stewart; a great-grandson Drake Keir; three brothers, Delbert Keir of Souderton, Pa., Walter Keir of Teachey, N.C., Ted Keir of Athens, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Harris of Waverly, N.Y., and Ester Stuart of Wallace, N.C.
He was predeceased in death by; two sisters, Beatrice Doud and Bessie Ward.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 12, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Bowen-Farr Funeral Home, Gordon Farr St., Ulster, Pa. with rev. Sandra Foster, pastor of the Ulster United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Sheshequin Cemetery, Sheshequin Township. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial donations be directed to: Five Rivers Council Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 5190, Horseheads, N.Y. in Mr. Keir's memory.
