James H. Murphy, 76, of Malta Route 2 died at 2:04 p.m. Wednesday at Good Samaritan Medical Center where he had been admitted two hours before following an apparent heart attack suffered at his home.

Born in Athens County Sept. 22, 1894, he was a son of William and Phoebe Van Horn Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a retired farmer, a member of the Nazarene Church, and an Army veteran of World War I.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dorotha Newburn of Malta Route 3, and Mrs. Della Howell of McConnelsville; three sons, Donald of Malta Route 3, Dwight of Pennsville and Delbert of McConnelsville Route 4; a foster daughter, Mrs. Mary Williams; 18 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; four sisters, Mrs. Rose Barnhart and Mrs. Gladys Schimmell, both of Malta Route 2, Mrs. Bernice Beach of South Zanesville, and Mrs. Alta Scott of Newark.

His wife, two sisters and four brothers are deceased.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Fisher Funeral Home in McConnelsville with Rev. James Baker officiating. Burial will be in Malta Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside. Friends may call at the funeral home 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
