Mrs. Phebe Jane Van Horn Murphey, 79, lifelong and esteemed resident of Union and Malta townships, died at 10:30 Friday morning at the home on the Happy Hollow road near the Arch in Upper Malta following an illness from heart trouble. While in failing health for some time, the immediate cause of death was a heart attack on the preceding Tuesday, from which she failed to rally.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30, at the Nazarene church, in charge of Rev. Hill and Rev. Steen, interment made in the Malta cemetery. Pall bearers were Delford Murphey, Lawrence Brown, Dean and Eugene Beach, Harold Murphey and Harold Wilson.

The following obituary was read at the funeral: Phebe Jane Van Horn Murphey was born July 2, 1864 and departed this life July 9, 1943, at the age of 79 years, one month and seven days. She was united in marriage to William Murphey, Nov. 9th, 1884, who departed this life Sept. 6, 1921. To this union were born 11 children, Mrs. Emery Smith, McConnelsville; Charles, James, Mrs. Branson Cramblit and Mrs. Pearl Barnhart of Malta route; Mrs. Fred Beach, Zanesville; Mrs. Shelby Scott, of Newark; Elmer of Malta; Riley of McConnelsville; and Floyd of the home. One daughter, Lucy Phillips, passed away Dec 3, 1907, at the age of 21.

Mrs. Murphey was a member of the Nazarene church of McConnelsville. She also leaves surviving 46 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Five grandsons are now serving our county and one more grandson will enter the call this July. A sister, Mrs. Hannah Gooding, of Saginaw, Michigan, also survives.

Memorial presented and maintained in conjunction with Murphy Nation, a multi-generational family history gateway dedicated to celebrating, documenting, preserving and providing increased awareness and access for the Murphy family pioneers of Morgan County, Ohio and their descendants and families.
