Malcolm W. Schliemann, son of Carl and Lulu (Irish) Schliemann, was born October 12, 1916 in rural Hartford, South Dakota. He grew up and received his education in the Hartford area.

On July 15, 1940 he was united in marriage to Myrline M. Young in Rock Rapids, Iowa. The couple lived in that area for a short time before settling in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he worked at John Morrell & Company. Malcolm entered the Army in 1945 serving in the 89th Signal Operations Battalion. After World War II, Malcolm returned to Sioux Falls and resumed his career at John Morrell. He retired in 1981 after 41 years of service. Myrline preceded him in death on June 1, 2002.

Malcolm had a love for music and played with various groups throughout the years. He loved to entertain and share his talents with friends and family. He also enjoyed pitching horseshoes and was very proud that Myrline was a nine-time state Horseshoe Pitching Champion.

He was a member of the Golden Age Club and the Sioux Valley Horseshoe Club.

While Malcolm and Myrline courted and his military time away, the couple sent each other letters totaling 764. Mally sent 369 letters, 60 postcards, and Myrline sent 295 letters and 40 postcards. The longest letter was 70 pages, sent by Myrline. Malcolm enjoyed the letters and after her death he reread them all over 16 times.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Donald (Marlene), Sioux Falls, Milford (Shirley), Beavercreek, Ohio, and Malvia Pritchard, Montrose; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sisters, Inda Phillips, Brandon, Hazel (Earl) Eggers, Getrude Westendorf, Hope (Harold) Limmer, all of Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.
