Violet Mae was born to parents Carl and lulu Schliemann on April 20, 1909 on a farm north of Hartford. She attended Hartford Public School and graduated from Hartford High School in 1926. She became a member of the Hartford Methodist Church in 1920. She married Peter F. Duimstra in that church on June 1, 1927. They moved to the Colton vicinity, moving into Colton in 1929. During her more than 55 years as a member of the Colton United Methodist Church, she served on the Administrative Board, Trustees, Treasurer to both church and woman's Society , Sunday School teacher, Youth Counselor, Library Board, Historian, Records & memorial Committee, Secretary of the U.M.W. and as janitor for several years. She was a member and held different offices in the Colton and Tri Valley PTA for 36 years, was a member of the Colton Bank Association and Tri Valley Booster Club, was the Colton representative to the Minnehaha Red Cross for 4 years and was a member of the Sioux Falls Chapter of National Mothers of Twins for many years in which she held various offices and was selected Mother of the Year in 1961. She was a member of the Colton Senior Citizens and a charter member of the Thrifty Dozen Club, Colton Service Club and Colton Extension Club. She was a member and reporter for the Colton Ataxia Foundation. She was office manager and news reporter for the Colton Courier for 14 years. She was an Argus Leader carrier for 8 years and was employed by Star Products. Because of her ill health she moved to Alcester in 1990 to be near her family.
Violet died Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the Morningside Manor Nursing Home in Alcester. Officiating: Rev. Donna McLaird, Organist: Hope Limmer, Special Music: Robin Embrock and Travis Johnson, Congregational Hymns: How Great Thou Art and Seet Hour Of Prayer. Honorary Casket bearers: All Her Other Children and Great Grandchildren. Casket bearers: Patti Duimstra, Carl J. Duimstra, Scott Smith, Chris Embrock, Paul Berg, Ken Duimstra Jr., Jason Nelsen, Troy Johnson and Angela Duimstra. Interment: Colton Cemetery, Colton, South Dakota. Funeral Arrangements by Minnehaha Funeral Home, Balic, Colton, Dell Rapids and Garretson.
