James was the son of Stephen and Lydia Andrus/Andrews Whited. He married Hannah Wilson. In their son Stephen's obituary, it states, she was the daughter of James Wilson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

James purchased land in Crawford County, Michigan in 1830. In 1841 he purchased land in Starke County Indiana. There is a land indenture for July 5th, 1847 to William Osborn and Nov. 15th 1847 to Wellr Tuman from James and Hannah Whited. He can be found in the 1850 Census for Starke County.
