Mary Elizabeth Parry was the eldest daughter of Matthew Hanna Parry and Jane Telford McKee and born near Kerrs Creek, Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Officiated by William F. Junkin, Mary married James Garland Laird 06 November 1861 in Rockbridge County and became stepmother to baby James Edwin Laird. The family would make their home in Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia and three more boys would be born to this union, David Arthur, John Parry and Charles McCluer.

Following the deaths of her husband and two of her sons, Mary would return to Lexington and share the home of her sister, Nancy McKee Parry Laird (married to James' brother, John) until her death.
