Mrs. Rachel Hunter died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Manning of Battle Creek township, at the age of 64 years, 11 months and 16 days, from diabetes, from which she had long been a sufferer. The remains were interred in the Minneapolis cemetery. The funeral services were attended by a large number of relatives and friends, on July 20, 1892.

The deceased was born in Indiana, August 4, 1827. She was married to Henry Jackson September 5, 1844. After his death she was married to William Hunter in November 1859. His death left her a widow the second time. She came to Kansas June 20, 1890, and resided with her children until her death. During long weeks of suffering she lay patient and uncomplaining and the prayer on her lips, "Dear Lord, help me." Loving and tireless hands ministered to her every want and all that human help could do was done to relieve her suffering. She gave her heart to Christ and united with the Christian church at the age of 18, and continued steadfast in the faith, dying with the sweet assurance of a home in heaven, where she awaits the children to whom she was to devoted here.

---From the Lincoln (Kansas) Beacon August 4, 1892

My great-grandmother was the mother of nine children. From her marriage to Henry Jackson there were William Mason, Noah Joe, Martha Jane, Phoebe, and Julia Frances. From her marriage to William Hunter there were Malinda, James Edward, Melvin Silas, and Florence Emma.
