Martha J. Manning

Martha Jane Jackson was born March 20, 1850, in Morgan County, Ind. At the age of seven years she moved with her parents to Centerville, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. On Sept. 5, 1872, she was united to William Manning in marriage. They lived in Iowa for six years and later, in March 1879, came to Lincoln County. They settled on a homestead 12 miles northwest of Lincoln and resided on this homestead 36 years, suffering all the hardships and trials of the early pioneers. She was industrious and frugal and helped make a happy home from the bleak and open prairie. She was a hospitable woman and even when her home was a dugout on the bare hillside, her friends found a warm welcome and she was always ready to share what she had with strangers or those less fortunate. As age came on Mr. and Mrs. Manning decided to leave the farm, coming to Lincoln in January 1915, where she resided until called home on July 24, 1929, at the advanced age of 79 years.
Mrs. Manning was converted at a school house revival in her girlhood and united with the Harmony Presbyterian church in 1893. She taught a Sunday school class in this church for 13 years and many of the children of the neighborhood came under the influence of her Christian training. Her membership was later transferred to the First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln.
Mrs. Manning had no children of her own to love and train, but her heart was tender to the needy and her home for many years sheltered orphaned or homeless children.
She has been in declining health for several years but was always patient and cheerful. She was taken sick with her last illness on May 12.
Those left to mourn her departure are her husband, W.M. Manning, one brother, J.E.Hunter of Barnard, one sister, Mrs. Van Dorn [Florence] of Centerville, Iowa, besides nephews and nieces and also many friends and neighbors. Those who knew her best loved her most.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, Saturday afternoon. Interment was made in the Lincoln Cemetery.
