Fond du Lac Commmonwealth Reporter, January 14, 1960. J.E. Hennen, Early Area Builder, Dies. Designer of Landmarks in City Expires at 90; Rites in St. Joseph's. Joseph E. Hennen, 90, of 156 Fifth street, a retired architect who during a long career designed and built many of the city's landmarks, died at Rolling Meadows, his home the last 10 months, at 9.a.m. today, the sixteenth anniversary of the death of Mrs. Hennen.. A lifelong resident of Fond du Lac county, Mr. Hennen was born December 19, 1869 in the Town of Forest. His parents were Mathias J. and Elizabeth Walgenbach Hennen. He was a cheesemaker in early manhood and later became a carpenter by trade and subsequently an architect. He became widely known in the architectural field. His first job was to design a residence for the late C.R. Burnton in 1901. Other buildings designed by the pioneer builder included the old Citizens bank, the old Gruenbeck store, Ahern's store, the W.T.Grant structure, Armory E, St. Joseph's church, St. Louis church rectory and many churches and schools in surrounding communities. A member of St. Joseph's church, he served as parish treasurer and consultant for 35 years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, and Catholic Order of Foresters. Mr. Hennen was a former supervisor from the Fourteenth Ward and a director of the Mt. Calvary State bank. He was a State of Wisconsin licensed architect. Mr. Hennen was married June 11, 1900, in St. Joseph's church by the late Rev. M.J.Taugher to Matie Crain, who died January 14, 1944. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Anthony Fritz, city; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Katherine Schmidlkofer, Mt. Calvary, John Hennen, city, and Mrs. Susan Loehr, Los Angeles. Friends may call at the Zacherl Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be there Saturday at 8:45 a.m. and at 9:15 a.m. at St. Joseph's church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
