Mary was the eldest of 14 children of William Markey, Jr. and Lucina Smith - her father's second wife. She lived at Tippecanoe, Ohio until moving to Illinois with her parents in 1859, where she married Elam Hale. They farmed in Schuyler Co. They had one son, Charlie. They raised their grandson, Dick, and he lived with Mary until her death in 1932.
