from the Republican for April 27, 1944:
Mrs. Joseph C. Hale, Union Township Pioneer, Dies
Martha Jane (Overstreet) Hale, daughter of Aaron and Catherine Overstreet, was born June 16, 1860, at Lizton and died Saturday, April 22, at her home near Lizton at the age of 83 years. She was one of a family of twelve, seven of whom have preceded her. At the age of seven, she, with her parents, moved to a farm west of Lizton, now occupied by a brother, Oliver Overstreet. Here she attended school and grew to womanhood. When 16 years old, she became affiliated with the Christian church of Lizton and later removed her membership to the Christian church of Pittsboro. She was also a member of the Woman's Relief Corps of Lizton. January 13, 1885, she was married to Joseph C. Hale and they made their home on a farm north of Pittsboro. After a few years they removed to the old homestead of his parents where they continued to live until their decease, Mr. Hale preceding her in 1927. To them two children were born, Urban Hale, who died at birth in 1887, and Edith Hale, now Mrs. Harry Rutledge of Lizton. After the decease of Mr. Hale, Mrs. Hale began failing in health and her daughter and family moved into the home of the mother so they could better care for her. She leaves to mourn their loss, her daughter and husband, five grandchildren, Mrs. Kathryn Brady of Danville, Mrs. Maxine Dale and Arline Rutledge of Lizton, John Hale and Robert Rutledge, both at home; two great grandchildren, Eddie and Billy Brady; three brothers, Aaron and Oliver Overstreet of Lizton, and Lee Overstreet of Sheridan, besides many other relatives and friends.
