Urban Huckster Found Dead Of Bullet Wound

A well-known Urbana huckster (door-to-door salesmen), Gilmer R. Hawkins, 66, was dead at his home Friday morning, a victim of suicide, according to State Police who investigated.

Dr. B. O. Thomas Sr., county medical examiner, was called and pronounced Hawkins dead of a self-inflicted wound. A 22. caliber pistol was lying by his side. He apparently shot himself in the chest around 5:30 a.m.

According to State Police, Hawkins had been despondent over poor health.

Hawkins bad been a huckster for years and was well-known in this city and county as well as in metropolitan areas where he had many farm produce and egg and poultry customers.

According to a report from a resident of the community, Frank Thompson, who is a colored school bus driver, discovered Mr. Hawkins lying in the back yard when he went to his place of business Friday morning. The State Police and the Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Company were called.

He was a son of the late Richard D. and Laura Zimmerman Hawkins and a member of the Urbana Methodist church and of Lynch Lodge 163 A. F. and A. Masons. Mr. Hawkins was a well-known huckster in Frederick county for over 30 years and also operated a fleet of trucks leased to the Frederick Trading Company for the past 10 years.

Surviving are eight children, Mrs. Glenn Crittenden, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Edwin Gilmer Hawkins, Urbana; Mrs. Ridgley Boyer, Severn, Md.; William Kenneth Hawkins, Braddock; Mrs. LeRoy Hildebrand, Woodsboro; David Hubert Hawkins, Urbana; Earl Woodfield Hawkins and Jean Elizabeth Hawkins, both at home; three brother and two sisters, Frank Hawkins, Evansville, Ind.; Steiner J. Hawkins and W. Earl Hawkins, both of Woodsboro, Mrs. Annie Cramer, Woodsboro and Miss Hester Hawkins, this city. Sixteen grandchildren also survive.

The body is at the funeral home, 105 East Church street, where friends may call after 7 o'clock this evening. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville. M. R. Etchison and son, funeral directors.
