CORVALLIS - Grant Etherington Blanch, 84, of Corvallis died Sunday. He was born and grew up in West Weber, Utah, the son of Joseph and Laura (Etherington ) Blanch. He graduated from Weber County High School in Ogden Utah, and served a mission in England for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As a teen he worked on his parents' farm and at a Del Monte Vegetable packing plant in the summers. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1940 and a master's degree in 1941, both in agriculture economics from Utah State University. He received his doctorate from Cornell University in New York in 1944. He married EmmaDell Hanson on Aug 25, 1941, in Logan, Utah. They soon moved to Brookings, S.D., and in 1945 moved to Corvallis.
Dr. Blanch started as an associate professor in the Oregon State University Department of Agricultural economics and spent 35 years on the faculty, retiring in 1980. He was a teacher and researcher and three times served as acting lead of his department of extended periods. He conducted estate planning workshops throughout Oregon for five winters.
He and his family sent two years in the 1950's in Bangkok, Thailand, while he was a visiting professor.
Dr. Blanch was technical leader for a U.S. Department of Agriculture sponsored agricultural marketing and finance team from Japan. He represented OSU at an international conference in Cuernavaca, Mexico; and was the Wester States Consortium for International Development representative to Tehran, Iran, considering a proposed bank contract.
His many awards included the Marion County Farm Bureau's Outstanding Service Award and the Benton Country Farm Bureau's Top hand Award. He was made an honorary lifetime member of the National Institute of Farm and Land Brokers.
Dr. Blanch was a founder of the OSU Federal Credit Union, serving as a member and chairman of the board. He served on three other corporate boards.
He held many leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including as a patriarch for the Corvallis Stake.
Surviving are wife EmmaDell; sons Richard of Round Rock, Texas, and Douglas of Lexington, Ky; daughter Carol Flory of Salem; 14 grandchildren and 10 great - - grandchildren; Four brothers and four sisters died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at DeMos-Durdan Garden Chapel and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Harrison Boulevard Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dr. Blanch's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church, followed by burial at Oak Lawn Memorial Park.
