Old Time Resident Dies in California
Jonathan Uhl, a Pioneer of Page County, Died in Los Angeles, Friday Morning
Jonathan Uhl who settled in Page county more than fifty years ago and who for the last ten years has made his home in California died Friday in Los Angeles following a several weeks illness with pneumonia according to word reaching friends in Shenandoah. Interment will be made in Los Angeles, the date of the funeral not having been announced. Mr. Uhl leaves his widow, three daughters, Joe Uhl, Grace Uhl and Mrs. Essie Carter and one son, Will, a dentist in Los Angeles. Mr. Uhl came to Page county from Dixon, Ill., with his brother-in-law, J. H. Bennett who was in the lumber business here. He settled in the White Cloud district, five miles southwest of Shenandoah being among the early settlers of that region. He owned 240 acres of land there on which he lived a number of years moving to Shenandoah in 1881 in the residence now owned by Senator H. I. Foskett on Clarinda avenue. Mr. Uhl was a brother of Mrs. Zac Mathus and Mrs. J. H. Bennett both formerly of Shenandoah and later of California. He was a member of the Congregational church and one who took the right side of all moral questions which arose. He still owns the property southeast of Shenandoah, and property in California. Mr. Uhl was the son of the Lutheran minister who visited in Shenandoah years ago speaking at the Congregational church when Rev. J. O. Stevenson was pastor. His daughter, Miss Joe Uhl was at one time managing editor of The Shenandoah World.
