MRS. JOANNA MATHUSS DIES

Widow of Late Former Councilman and Prominent in Y.W.C.A. Work to Be Buried Monday

Mrs. Joanna E. Mathuss, Y.W.C.A. worker, and widow of the late Z. D. Mathuss, former City Councilman, died at her home at 1725 Fifth avenue yesterday morning after a lingering illness. She was 79 years of age.

Funeral services will be conducted from her home Monday at 2 p.m. and burial will take place in Rosedale Cemetery.

When the local chapter of the Young Women's Christian Association was organized in Los Angeles in 1893 Mrs. Mathuss was its first president, an office she occupied for four years. Until 1908 she acted as vice-president, and during the sixteen months when the Y.W.C.A. Building at Third and Hill streets was under construction, she was chairman of the building committee. In addition to her work she made substantial financial contributions to the organization. She was a member of the territorial committee of the Y.W.C.A. and in 1904, she, accompanied by Miss Cora Tatham, represented the Los Angeles association at the international convention in Paris.

The deceased and her late husband were charter members of the Immanuel Presbyterian Church, and as active workers saw the first church grow into a great body. She was also a member of the Ebell Club.

Mrs. Mathuss was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Rev. William Uhl, a pioneer English Lutheran minister. She married Mr. Mathuss in Dixon, Ill., in 1869, and came to Los Angeles in 1886. Mr. Mathuss died here three and one-half years ago.

The deceased was the last member of her father's family. Four nieces and a nephew, Mrs. A. S. Carter, Josie W. Uhl, Grace E. Uhl, Dr. W. T. Uhl, all of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Harry F. Booth of Monrovia, are the only immediate living relatives.
