Well Known Monrovian Dies at Home Here after Illness Extending Over Long Period
Emmanuel Christian Uhl, since 1895 a respected resident of Monrovia, died at his home, No. 206 South Heliotrope, this morning at 3:20 o'clock. He would have been 73 years of age on August 22 of this year.Seven years ago he suffered an apoplectic stroke, and since that time has been an invalid. The second and third strokes caused his death. Surviving member of the family are the widow and daughter, Miss Gretchen Uhl, who arrived home from Stanford the first of the week; a sister, Mrs. Z. D. Mathuss, and brother, Jonathan Uhl, both of Los Angeles. Mr. Uhl was born in Gettysburg, Pa., August 22, 1844. Early in life he moved to Illinois and later to Des Moines, where he was head of a large implement manufacturing house. There he married Miss Anna Gjems. The funeral services will be from the residence next Thursday at 10:30 a.m., Dr. W. D. Landis officiating. Interment will be in Rosedale cemetery, Los Angeles. Though in ill health during the past seven years, Mr. Uhl was always interested in Monrovia and in Monrovians, and took special pains to keep himself informed upon the movements of local municipal business and civic government. His death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends.
