James W. Carson, was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, July 10, 1843. He moved with his parents to Clarke county, Iowa in April 1855. He enlisted in Co. I, 15th regiment of Iowa Infantry October 30, 1861, and was discharged December 5, 1863, at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Reenlisted December 6, 1863, and was discharged from the service July 24, 1865.
On the 6th of January, 1863 he was appointed sergeant. He returned home and was married to Sarah J. Tedrow on October 23, 1867. To this union was born one son, William H., who still survives his parents.
On April 26, 1900, Mr. Carson was appointed by Gov. Shaw as a member of the commission for the erection of monuments on the battlefield of Shiloh.
His wife, Sarah J. Carson, having died September 28, 1870, he was married September 28, 1871 to Martha E. Chambers, and to this union were born four children Robert C., Della E., Edward C. and Marshall A., all of whom were present at the funeral except Marshall A. who died at the age of ten years.
Mr. Carson died May 19, 1910, at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 9 days. He has four brothers and four sisters: A. C. Thomas, E. L. and J. S., Mary Arnett, Ellen Reese, Nancy Johnson and Caroline Crowl, all of whom were present except Thomas of Missouri, and Caroline of Indiana.
He was an active member of the M. E. church until the church at Ottawa was removed, since which time he has joined no church.
Funeral services were held at the U. B. church at Ottawa by the Rev. Kesterson, assisted by the Woodburn, Osceola and Murray lodges of Odd Fellows.
