John Painter, a son of Andrew and Catherine Painter, was born in Richland County, Ohio, where his paternal grandfather entered land in 1814, and his father was enumerated in 1830 and paid a tax in 1836. John Painter moved with his family to Clark County, Ohio, by 1840, and farmed in the county's Springfield Township for much of his life.

John Painter and "Mrs. Mary Garlough (widow)" (née Mary Hayes Tuttle, widow of John Luse Garlough) were married on 1 October 1857 in Springfield, Clark County. She had three children from her first marriage. The couple had one son, Edward Garlough Painter, born in February 1858.

From being a landless farm laborer in 1860, John Painter became by 1870 a farmer owning land worth $3,500. Mary Hayes Painter died in 1897. John Painter afterwards visited relatives, and may have resided for some time, in Champaign County, Illinois.

John Painter and Mrs. Mary "Schriver" (née Mary Emeline Stanley, widow of Cyrus Shriver) were married on 24 January 1900 in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana. The couple were enumerated later that year in Champaign County, Ohio; John Painter was farming. In 1910, John Painter, at age 77, was a farm laborer in Champaign County, Ohio. His wife was then enumerated with her son in Springfield. She died in 1913 in Springfield.

Sometime after the death of his second wife, John Painter moved to Gratiot County, Michigan, to be near his brother Isaac Painter, whose younger son Isaac Sherman Painter was farming in that county. John Painter died in 1919 Bethany Township, Gratiot County, at the age of 87.

Research Note

In conjunction with John Painter's 1900 marriage, the database Indiana, Marriage Index, 1800-1941 shows that John Painter, age 69, was the son of Andrew and Margaret. This conflicts with other records indicating Andrew and Catherine/Katherine (1850 U.S. Census, 1850 Sinking Creek Church membership, and John Painter's 1919 death certificate). This index cites as its source a W.P.A. Index to Supplemental Record Marriage Transcript 1 from an original book (W-3, p. 28) in the Clerk's Office, Madison County, Indiana. The original book was destroyed.

Connections

John Painter's wife's brothers Isaac Tuttle and Harvey H. Tuttle, and John's brother Emanuel Painter served together in Company D, 146th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Although not known to be related, both John Painter and his second wife descended from Burlington Co., New Jersey, Quakers.
