Charles Alphonso Singer was the oldest of the seven children born to William Singer and Nancy (Tole) Singer (he had a older half-sister Edith Kime and half-brother Arthur Kime, however). Born in Farm Ridge township of LaSalle County, Illinois in 1873, he spent a brief period of time (about 1877 to 1882) in the Township of Seventy-Six, Sumner County, Kansas, where his family made an attempt at farming on the Great Plains. The family returned briefly to LaSalle County before moving on to Strawn, Livingston County, Illinois, where Charles spent the majority of his adult life. At the time of the 1900 US Census in Strawn, Charles was listed as having the occupation of a painter, along with his father and several brothers. Charles Singer married Christina M. Hornickel of the nearby Germanville township on April 25, 1901. They had two sons William and Robert, who died as infants in 1902 and 1903, respectively. Daughter Josephine was born in 1905, and Charles, Jr. was born in 1913. For a brief period of time between the birth of their last 2 children they farmed in La Crosse, Jackson County, Minnesota with Christina's youngest brothers Jacob and Paul Hornickel (see 1910 census). In the 1917 Farmers Directory for Livingston County, Illinois, Charles A. Singer and Christine (Hornickel), along with their children Josephine and Charles, were shown as tenant farmers of 240 acres in Section 1 of the Forrest township. The 1920 US Census lists Charles A. Singer and his wife Christina as renting a farm in Rogers township, Ford County, Illinois, near the town of Cabery. Curiously, at the time of the Census a hired man named Otis Hutchinson is listed living with them, but neither of their children are shown living with them. Josephine and Charles, Jr. may have been staying with relatives at the time.

Charles died in 1921 and his wife Christina outlived him by 42 years. They are buried alongside one another in the Strawn Cemetery, Livingston County, Illinois.

The following obituary of Charles Alfonso Singer appeared in an edition of the Fairbury Blade (Illinois) newspaper:
