GUYTON - Mary Gladyce Ward Sowell, 83, formerly of Savannah, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Bulloch County and was preceded in death by her parents, Carrie Hudson Ward and Lillie Mae Morris Ward; three brothers, Jesse Willard Ward, Jack Dempsey Ward and Herman O'Dell Ward; two sisters, Shirley Ann Ward and Bonnie Ward Holland.

She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where she had taught kindergarten and taught in the Children's Department of the Sunday School for many years, was a Girl Scout Leader for 27 years at the church, a member of the George Balmer Sunday School Class, the Cox Circle of Love, a member of the church since 1948 and the Sanctuary Choir.

She had formerly worked in the lunchroom at Union Camp Paper Company and in the record department of Kress's 5 and 10 cent store. She was a member of the Grand Lodge, of the Ladies Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Josh Crawford "J.C." Sowell of Guyton; three daughters, Susan Sowell Harbin (Floyd) of Richmond Hill, Cindy Sowell Carter (George) of Rocky Ford and Jan Sowell Landing (Jerry) of Guyton; two brothers, Johnnie Eugene Ward, Brooklet, and Albert Hudson Ward, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three sisters, Minnie Lee Devoe, Millen, Bobbie Ward Bachman, Brunswick, and Betty Ward Waine of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Leslie Dixon (Wayne) Rocky Ford, Matthew Harbin (Sara), Rincon, Josh Spitler (Liz) of Marietta, Ga., Jeffrey Donaldson (Melanie) of Rincon, Jordan Harbin, Richmond Hill, Allison, Will and Taylor Landing, all of Guyton; five great-grandchildren, Nikki Spitler and Joshua Spitler, both of Rocky Ford, Gibson and Pearl Harbin and Jaden Donaldson, all of Rincon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service: 11 a.m. Saturday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Meguiar, the Rev. Matt Waldron and the Rev. David Aycock officiating.

The graveside service: 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Brooklet City Cemetery in Brooklet.
