Benjamin joined CO A, 4th Regiment of the Missouri State Militia Cavalry as a Second Lieutenant and ranked out as a First Lieutenant. He later joined CO F, 35th Regiment, Missouri Infantry and ranked out as a Full Captain on May 1, 1863. Mustered out on June 28, 1865. He was a Union sympathizer.
