During the early years of their marriage, he served in the United States Army. He was a master sergeant when he received his discharge after World War II.
Bernard served as the mayor of Batchtown for 28 years, and was a member of the Richwood Volunteer Fire Department. He was elected sheriff of Calhoun County and served for 8 years. He also was the county treasurer and tax collector for 8 years. He served as vice chairman of the West Central Illinois Law Enforcement Commission for a time.
He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Helen was a homemaker and devoted mother. She worked as a beautician for more than 40 years. She was an active member of St. Barbara's Catholic Church.
Bernard died at Jersey Community Hospital at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 11 days.
He was survived by his wife, Helen; 2 daughters, Martha Bick of Batchtown, and Mary Baalman of Meppen, Illinois; 1 son, Bernard E. Hillen of Batchtown; 10 grandchildren; 1 sister, Estelle Schleeper of Brussels, Illinois; and 1 brother, Clem Hillen of Meppen.
Bernard was preceded in death by an infant son; and his mother and father.
Visitation was held on 18 Jan 1981 at the Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin, Illinois. A parish rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus service took place at 8:30 p.m. A funeral Mass was conducted at 9:30 a.m. the following morning at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Batchtown. Graveside rites were performed by the harrell-Mager American Legion Post No. 632.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Leukemia Foundation or to the Batchtown Village Park.
