During the early years of their marriage, Bernard served in the United States Army. He was a master sergeant by the time he received his discharge after World War II.
Helen was a homemaker and devoted mother. She worked as a beautician for more than 40 years. She was a member of St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Batchtown, Calhoun County, Illinois. She was active in the St. Barbara's Altar Sodality and the Batchtown Women's Club.
Bernard was active in local politics and served as the mayor of Batchtown for 28 years. He was the Calhoun County sheriff for 8 years. He was the treasurer and tax collector for 8 years.
Bernard passed away in 1981.
Helen lived until 1997. She died at Calhoun Care Center at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 24 days.
She was survived by 1 son; 2 daughters; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Lucille Klaas of Florissant, Missouri.
In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by an infant son; 1 brother, August Franke; and 3 sisters, Charlotte Klaas, Nevada Franke and Ruth Franke.
Visitation was held on 20 Jan 1997 at the Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin, Illinois. A prayer service took place there at 5 p.m. A funeral Mass was conducted at 10 a.m. the following morning at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Batchtown.
Helen was buried next to her husband, Bernard.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, the church or to the charity of one's choice.
