Sam Chavis, 57, farmer of Neeses, Route 1, died suddenly at 3:45 p.m. today of a heart attack at his home. He was born in Orangeburg County, son of the late Arthur Chavis and Mrs. Mamie Hutto Chavis. He had lived at Neeses all his life, and was a member of Mt. Beulah Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Evellena Jackson Chavis; his mother; six daughters, Mrs. Adelle Tucker and Mrs. Dorothy Brides of Columbia, Mrs. Lorene Chavis of Norway; Mrs. Lila Williams of Springfield, Mrs. Mamie Williams of West Columbia and Mrs. Jewel Buff of Neeses; five sons, James of Springfield, Edward L. of Creekmore, N.C., Arthur of Cordova, Sam Chavis Jr., of the United States Coast Guard and Nazro Chavis of Neeses; one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Kodak of Columbia; four brothers, Morgan of North, Marion of West Columbia and Earl and Harvey Chavis of Columbia; 18 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Sam Chavis, 57, of Neeses, who suddenly Friday at his home, will be conducted at 11 a.. Monday from Mount Beulah Pentecostal Holiness Church near Neeses by the pastor, the Rev. Rufus Blakely, assisted by the Rev. Lucius Chavis. Burial will be in the churchyard. The body will be at the home of Mrs. Lorene Chavis at Norway until 3:30 p.m. when it will be taken to the church. © The State, Columbia, SC, 17 Feb 1957
