MARK

Vernon F. Mark was born March 4, 1911 in the De Soto-Earlham area, the second son of Frank S. Mark and Verle Chestnutwood Mark, and died March 5th, 1985, at his home in Indianola, Iowa. He was 74 years and 1 day old.

He graduated from the Earlham High School.

On July 12, 1936 he was married to Catherine E. Hughes and they were the parents of four children, Darrell L., Janet I., Jerry and Frank.

Vernon was a farmer but due to the hard times of his generation, he also worked at other occupations, such as Dico Chemical in Des Moines and as a school bus driver at I-35 for example.

It was also necessary for them to move to different areas to provide a living, so they lived in Missouri, Illinois, Omaha, Lucas and Warren County. They moved from New Virginia about five years ago to their home in Indianola.

While in the New Virginia area, they attended the Broadhorn Church. Vernon confessed Christ as his Savior and his faith carried him through the years of illness and the last days of his struggle with cancer. He was a man who loved his family and home. A man of good humor with a ready smile. A good husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; son Darrell and wife Roberta of Des Moines; daughter Janet Bethard and husband Larry of Round Rock, Texas; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Mark of Lancaster, Mo.; and a sister, Lola Adams of Middletown, Maryland; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Vaughn. Vernon and Catherine also lost two sons, Jerry and Frank, as well as a granddaughter, Cheryl Mark.

Services were conducted by Pastor Jim Patrick, of Indianola, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, on March 9, 1985 with burial in the Chariton Cemetery.
