Hilda Grotte, 86, lived a long and fruitful life, most of it on the prairies of what is now Daniels County. She passed away last Saturday at the hospital in Scobey.
She was born at Wiota, WI in the year 1893 and was raised and educated at Wadena, MN. She married Thorbjorn Grotte at Wadena, MN in 1913 and they came out where Thor had taken up land southeast of Scobey.
They later bought land near Four Buttes and the family grew up and was educated in rural schools and in Scobey schools.
Mrs Grotte was preceded in death by the oldest son Herman, onetime Scobey track star and by her husband in 1969, after which she moved into Scobey.
Surviving her are two sons, Boyd, whose farming includes the home place; Carroll of East Helena, a daughter, Thelma Tucey of Las Vegas. Also, two sister and a brother, Tina Lundberg of Concord, CA; Olga Jordahl and Hjalmer Westby (her family name) , both of Verndale, MN; ten grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Lutheran services in Scobey were Wednesday this week and burial in Scobey Cemetery, Waller Funeral Home arrangements.
Pallbearers were Milton Shipstead, Glen Hanrahan, George Denowh, Kenneth Erstad, Mark Shipstead and Tom Hagan.
Hilda Grotte was an active lady in church work and both during and after her family was raised, she was known as an excellent gardener dating from those early days on the prairie when most of the food for the family was raised at home.
