Neal Davis was born August 3, 1895, in the Campti Community, Shelby County, Texas, to Zachary Taylor and Sophronia Pittman Davis. Neal had seven brothers: Robert, Francis, Edward William, Judge Thomas Orange, Zachary Wiley, Judge Thomas Orren, W I, J F, and Charles Samuel, and five sisters: Elizabeth Davis Holmes (WW I army nurse), Ada Hesser, Laura Davis, Cassie Davis, and Minnie Downer Holman.
A pre-med student at the University of Texas, Neal Davis enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 7, 1917. He was sent to Parris Island, South Carolina, for boot camp. He was accepted as a Marine flying candidate and was sent for training to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and to Miami, Florida. While in training he was promoted to corporal on March 2, 1918. Corporal Davis was discharged on August 22, 1918, to accept an appointment as 2nd Lieutenant in the USMC Reserve Flying Corps. He received his wings as a Naval Aviator on August 28, 1918, and served overseas from at least September 29, 1918, through November 16, 1918, shortly after armistice was declared. He had been sent to the Marine Aviation Force at Calais, France, arriving October 5, 1918. He was discharged from service in January 1919.
After the war Neal returned to the University of Texas to complete his medical degree, and he was a prominent physician in the Houston area for many years. He married Marguerite Seagraves on Christmas Day, 1930, in Galveston, Texas. They had two sons, Odie Richard and Neal II. Dr. Neal Davis moved back to Center after retirement. He died there at age 70, on February 12, 1966.
