Sarah married John Henry Fortner at Greenwood, Arkansas, on December 17, 1882, and they were to have six children, as follows: William Austin Fortner, married Bertie Kembrow; Clinton Brown Fortner; Effie Emily Fortner, married William Henry Johnson; Matilda Fortner, married Mr. Haynes; Alice Bell Fortner, married Mr. Evans; and James Frank Fortner, married Jessie L Goforth.
Sarah died soon after the youngest was born in 1896. Sarah was buried in an unmarked grave in Mountain View Cemetery, which is adjacent to the Mountain View Baptist church, which her parents and two ministers founded in 1889 (see photo of corner stone).
