Dollie was the youngest of thirteen children born to Eleanor Jane [Millikan] and James Hervey McChesney. She was born in 1871 in Fredonia, Kentucky. When she was 14, her father died. At 16, she moved with her two sisters, Kirby and Nancy, to Wills Point, VanZandt County, Texas where her brother Vernon Twiggs McChesney was a lawyer. There she became a school teacher along with her sisters Kirby and Nancy. In 1888, her brother died. Nancy and Dollie moved to Plano, Collin County Texas where together they opened a millinery business selling hats. Dollie died in 1899 in Plano Texas at the age of 28.
