William Carl Nickel, son of William and Wilhelmine Nickel (nee Lueck) was born in Germantown Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota on March 29, 1882. Mr. Nickel departed from this life at the Springfield Community Hospital on Sunday, January 17, 1959 - at 7:20 p.m. after a three-week illness due to a stroke. He had reached the age of 76 years, nine months, and 19 days at the time of his death. Wm. C. Nickel received Holy Baptism in his infancy, was instructed in the teachings of the Holy Bible, experienced conversion at the age of 15 years, joined the Evangelical United Brethren Church, of which he was a faithful and active member at the time of death. He had been a member of this church for 61 years. William was united in Holy Marriage on March 9, 1905, to Ida Frances Radach, daughter of Ferdinand and Marie Radach (nee Marie Winter). The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. Schultz in the Sanborn Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with five children - three daughters and two sons: - Alma, Arnold, Marvin, Mabel, and Elnora. Fifty years later, on March 9, 1955, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Nickel celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the Red Rock Evangelical Church. Mr. Nickel was a progressive pioneer farmer in the Jeffers community; retiring in Jeffers in the year 1942. He was also active in serving official capacities in the community and also in his church. He was a well-informed Bible student, using his Bible knowledge as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. The departed will also be remembered as a good sportsman in his hobby of fishing. He was a loving husband and father, a good provider, a kind relative, neighbor, and friend.
He was preceded in death by: - his parents; one sister - Lena, Mrs. John Prodoehl of Renville; two brothers - a brother who passed away in Germany at seven years of age, and brother August, who passed away on March 24, 1955.
He leaves to mourn his passing: - His loving WIFE, Ida; two sons - Arnold of Jeffers, and Marvin of Sanborn; three daughters - Alma (Mrs. Orva Hoehne) of Sanborn, Mabel (Mrs. Arnold Gode) of Sanborn, and Elnora (Mrs. Melvin Gode) of Springfield. 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother - Fred Nickel of Jeffers; three sisters - Mrs. Amelia Pankonin of Jeffers, Mrs. Emma Karow of Springfield, and Minne (Mrs. Louie Block) of Santa Ana, California. Also many other relatives and many friends. His cheerful disposition, his hearty hand-shake, his thoughtfulness of others will be missed by all his acquaintances. May the sustaining mercy, Love, and Grace of God abide with us who mourn his departure.

Funeral service Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1959 - the funeral chapel at Jeffers at 1:15 p.m. and Red Rock Evangelical U.B. Church - 2:00 p.m. Officiating Pastor - Rev. E. H. Pfeifer. Music:- Mrs. Walter Kosel, Pianist; (at the church) Men's chorus sang: - "Kneel at the Cross" and "Looking This Way." Music at Chapel: Mixed Quartet sang - "Jesus Savior Pilot Me." Pallbearers: - Elmer Pankonin, Lester Prodoehl, Ervin Nickel, Wallace Bierman, Wesley Leopold, and Lawrence Crist. Interment was made at the Red Rock Evangelical United Brethren Cemetery. --Arrangement by Jeffers Chapel Service, Melvin G. Klasse.
