The couple farmed and lived on the Nickel family homestead until retiring and moving to Springfield in 1973. Marvin moved into Vista Ridge Apartment in 1998 and was a resident there until it became necessary for him to move to St. John's Lutheran Home on April 19, 2006. He was a lifetime member of Red Rock United Methodist Church (formerly Red Rock E.U. B.) and served as a trustee, on many church boards, and was janitor for many years.
A highlight of his life was singing in the Men's Chorus. He enjoyed the many activities at St. John's especially playing bingo and being part of the Bell Choir. In 1969, Marvin won a Hydrostatic International tractor by writing the winning slogan for the introduction of hydrostatic drive. He was very proud of this.
He is survived by his children - Shirley Ann and Dean McNeal of Fulda, Virgil and Jill Nickel of Melrose, Marlow and Marilyn Nickel of Jeffers, Audrey and Gary Jorgenson of Sioux Falls, and David and Janis Nickel of Lamberton; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife- Effie in 1999; brother- Arnold; and sisters- Alma, Elnora and Mabel. *obituary from Sturm Funeral Home of Springfield.
