Gotthold Schmidt was the youngest child of Gottlieb & Louise (Maas or Mohs) Schmidt, who were immigrants from Saxony, Germany. Gotthold, along with his mother, moved to Calhoun County, IA about 1890. He was married to Ida Gutz on 17 Sept. 1891 in Calhoun Co., IA. She was the daughter of Friedrich "Fred" & Anna (Zebrantka) Gutz. Gotthold & Ida had one son, Lawrence G. Schmidt.

Services at Pomeroy for Gotthold Schmidt
Pomeroy – Gotthold Schmidt, 85, who had been in failing health for more than a year, died at his home in Pomeroy last Thursday afternoon.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran church, the Rev. P. E. Ross officiating. Robert George was soloist. Pallbearers were George Voss, Carl Marten, William Seehusen, Otto Baedke, Ben Bohn and Henry Nieting. Burial was in Union cemetery.
Mr. Schmidt was born Sept. 11, 1864, at Chatham, Ill. He came to Calhoun county in 1880[sic]. He was married Sept. 17, 1891, to Ida Gutz.
The Schmidt's farmed near Twin Lakes until illness made it necessary for him to retire in 1906.
Surviving are Mrs. Schmidt and one son, Lawrence G. Schmidt.

Funeral Service Sunday For Gotthold Schmidt

Funeral services for Gotthold Schmidt, whose death was noted in The Herald last week, were held Sunday afternoon, July 16, at 2:15 in the family home and at 2:30 in Immanuel Lutheran church in Pomeroy, Rev. P. E. Ross in charge. Robert George sang "The Lord Is My Shepherd" as a solo, Mrs. Milton Heins accompanying at the organ. Mrs. Wm Sechusen, Mrs. Otto Baedke and Mrs. Fred Meyer were in charge of the flowers.
Casket bearers were George Voss, Henry Nieting, Ben Bohn, Carl Marten, Wm. Sechusen and Otto Baedke. Burial was in Union cemetery at Pomeroy.
Gotthold Schmidt, son of Gottlob and Louisa Mohs Schmidt, was born September 11, 1864 at Chatham, Illinois. He was reared there, coming to Calhoun County in 1890.
On September 17, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Gutz and to them was born one son, Lawrence G. Schmidt. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt farmed near Twin Lakes until a serious illness and an operation made retirement necessary in 1908. They then moved into Pomeroy, which has since been their home. On September 17, 1941, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home in Pomeroy.
Mr. Schmidt did carpenter work as his health permitted. For the past several years he had been gradually failing in health. He had been confined to his home they past few months and cared for by his wife. Mr. Schmidt passed away Thursday, July 13, 1950, having reached the age of 85 years, 10 months and 2 days.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Lawrence G. Schmidt; two grandchildren, Curtis and Myrna Lou Schmidt; several nephews and nieces; other relatives and a host of friends. His parents, five sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Out of town people here for the funeral services Sunday included Mrs. Lena Runge, Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Stephan, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Graalmann, Dr. and Mrs. N. W. Runge, Kenneth and Marilyn, Mrs. M. F. Stadtmueller and Victor of Fort Dodge; Rev. and Mrs. Otto Nieting of Vinton; Mrs. J. C. Edredge of Ames; Mrs. Audra Gibbs of Greenfield; Mrs. Edward Baur of Van Meter; Mr. and Mrs. Kris Solberg of Ida Grove; Mrs. Carrie George of Albert City; Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gutz of Havelock; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Tjabben of Mallard; and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Schmidt of Carroll.
