George M. Bence died Monday forenoon, Sep. 16, 1912, at his home on south Pine Street, Windsor. Funeral and burial services were conducted at Ash Grove church Tuesday forenoon by his pastor, Rev. E. U. Smith of the Windsor Christian church. Mr. Bence was born in Ohio on Oct. 14, 1841 and therefore was 70 y 11m 2d. He was married three times, his first wife being Catherine Boyd and the date of their wedding being Sep. 10, 1862. She died Mar. 17, 1878, and was laid to rest in Smyser cemetery. To this union were born six sons and four daughters. Mr. Bence later married Isa Belle Dora Rankin, who passed away Jan. 26, 1903. Several children were born to them. His third marriage was with Mrs. Anna Forbes, who survives him. He is also survived by six sons, Jason, Samuel, George E., Alvah, Lyman, and Roy; four daughters, Mrs. Ella [W. S.] Rankin, Mrs. Laura [R.] Sprague; Mrs. Cora [J. W.] Sharp, Mrs. Nora [S.] Wall; and several grandchildren, also by two stepchildren, Alvah Forbes and Mrs. J. C. Black, both of whom are married and reside in Decatur. Mr. Bence served in the civil war in the 97th Illinois voluntary infantry and six of his army comrades, viz; Capt. P. M. Hill, S. Duncan, James Ellis, F. M. Leeds, J. N. Storm and George Athey acted as pallbearers. Over 35 years ago Mr. Bence united with the Smyser Christian church, later placing his membership with the Windsor Christian church.
