He was born to William and Nancy Brown Caudle. Being the 2nd son of the 10 children they had together. Total of 7 sons and 3 daughters. This was his father's second family. He married Nancy after his first wife died leaving him with 5 living children (two had passed) 4 sons and 1 daughter. So Jake had 14 living siblings.

On Sep 12, 1851 he joined in marriage to Nancy E. Gough, in Yadkin County. To this union 9 children were born (four being two sets of twin girls!). 3 sons and 6 daughters.

He was a farmer. Once married census over the years had them in only in Yadkin County, some saying East Bend another Fall Creek.

After Nancy died in 1894 he married Margaret Meyers the following year at age 65. She was probably a widow herself at the time. Their marriage was short lived with him passing 2 years later.
