Edith Marie Clark was born in Erie, PA on Monday, May 16, 1898. Her parents were Oren Elmer Clark and Carrie Eliza Range Clark. She married Edward Thaddeus Schauer on Tuesday, June 22, 1915 in Erie, PA. They were married for twenty-seven years and raised these eight children:
Vesta Marie Boyer (1916-1990)
Gladys Wynojen Linhart (1918-1997)
Harold Edward Schauer (1920-2006)
Evelyn Mae Elmer (1921-1994)
Homer Raymond Schauer (1924-2009)
Clyde Morris Schauer (1926-
Kenneth Eugene Schauer (1928-2008)
Paul Calvin Schauer (1931-2003)
Following her husband's passing in 1942 Edith was 47 years old with no income and five unmarried children still at home. It has been said that two of her sons, Paul and Kenneth, enlisted in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy respectively, because they were hungry. Edith worked as a practical nurse for many families and in return would get her room and board and some pay. She worked for the Ashtabula Children's Home in the laundry detail ironing clothes. When not working in someone's home she lived with her oldest daughter Vesta Boyer's family in Ashtabula, OH. She kept her home at 3913 Stanton in Erie and read the help wanted, housekeeper ad, for John Henry Gates, in Palmyra, NY. They married on Wednesday, January 1, 1958 at the Ashtabula Church of God in Ashtabula, OH. Officiating was Rev. Jay Bentley with her son, Homer Schauer, providing the music. They lived in Palmyra for a short time, and then moved to her home in Erie. In early 1960 after being ill for several weeks John died at Doctors Osteopathic Hospital in Millcreek Township, Erie. In the two years that followed she devoted a great deal of time in caring for her father at her home until his death on Monday, March 19, 1962. Her final housekeeping role was in Geneva, OH for Joel Hull. They made one trip together to southern California so she could visit children and grandchildren. After many years caring for Joel two of her children, Gladys and Harold, realized she was no longer able to do her job. They assisted her move to the San Diego area where she lived for a time with her son Harold's family, and then Kenneth's family, before moving to a nursing home with advancing dementia. Edith passed away from causes incident to old age on Sunday, February 2, 1992 in San Diego, CA.  She and her husband Ed are buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Millcreek Township, Erie. To the left of their grave sites in an unmarked grave is the final resting place of her second husband, John Henry Gates.
