He was the son of William Bridwell and Sarah Jane Hood. In 1880, his parents and siblings were living in McLeansboro, Illinois (Hamilton County). They moved to Arkansas around 1883. Sometime after 1886, they moved to Indian Territory, where his youngest brother was born in September 1891, around the time of the land rush.

His father died in 1899 and in 1900, Sam was living on a farm his mother was renting in Township 4, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory with his widowed mother and his siblings. His mother's household included: Sarah J., age 40, born April 1860 in Illinois; John H., age 21, born June 1878 in Illinois; Mattie Gertrude, age 20, born March 1880 in Illinois; Idiah, age 18, born January 1882 in Illinois; Sam, age 16, born July 1883 in Arkansas; Minnie D., age 13, born November 1886 in Arkansas; and Willie H., age 8, born September 1891 in Indian Territory. His brother Harry and his family lived nearby.

In 1906, he married Emma Holford and by 1910, they had two children. They were living in Purcell, Oklahoma (McClain County). Their household included: Sam, age 24, born in Arkansas, married once for four years; Emma, age 21, born in Oklahoma, married once for four years, two children; S. J. a son, age 2, born in Oklahoma; and C. C., a son age 2/12, born in Oklahoma.

In 1917, he registered for the World War I draft. He reported his birthdate as July 4, 1885. He was of medium build with grey eyes and light hair.

In 1920, the family was still living in Purcell, in a home they owned. Sam owned a store. His household included: Same, age 34; Emma, age 31; Sam, Jr., age 11; C. C., age 9; Bonnie Joe, age 8; and Billie, a daughter, age 4. By 1930, the family was still in their home in Purcell. Sam was a retail merchant who owned a grocery store. Emma worked as a saleslady in the store. His oldest son, Cecil C. was 20 years old and working for the railroad. His daughter Bonnie J. was 18, and his daughter Billie L. was 14.
